Lions Youth of the Year
Youth of the Year is a project of Lions Australia and is sponsored and run by the Lions and Leos Clubs of Australia. The prime focus is to give youth an opportunity to develop confidence in their ability to talk to community leaders and present themselves as a confident young person worth considering for any position, in any field of interest, in the future. This also includes being able to speak confidently to an audience on subjects of their choosing.
At Sophia College, students are afforded the opportunity to partake in the Lions Youth of the Year Competition which allows them to actively engage in the local Laidley community while building confidence in public speaking.
Readers' Cup
Public speaking can increase student confidence in interacting with others in school and in the workplace. Problems like performance anxiety and nervousness can be reduced through the development of speaking skills and the confidence associated with those skills when you're confident about your skills. Public speaking skills helps students to share information meaningful and authoritatively. Readers' Cup provides such an opportunity at Sophia College.
Readers' Cup is a state wide competition for student readers. Teams of four to five students together read a set of books, and then compete with other teams to answer quiz questions from the books. Students from Sophia College have competed in, and had success in, regional and state competitions.
